The Venice Film Festival red carpet is adorned with vintage Hollywood glitz

Which year is it once more? 81st Venice Film Festival attendees' outfits on the red carpet would have you thinking the year was 1924 instead of 2024. Attendees have been subtly paying homage to classic Hollywood glitz since Wednesday, showcasing everything from accessories with a vintage vibe to classic dress styles.

Tilda Swinton was spotted yesterday getting out of a Venetian water taxi wearing a special navy Delpozo silk ensemble, which included some envious-looking capris. At the premiere of Pablo Larrian's "Maria," a biopic that chronicles the turbulent life of 20th-century soprano Maria Callas, last week, leading lady Angelina Jolie appeared to adopt the persona of the character. Jolie accessorized her nude-toned handmade Tamara Ralph gown with a golden rose-shaped brooch, a deep red lip color, and a faux fur shrug reminiscent of the 1930s. While Jolie's outfit is eerily similar to the shrugs that Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and Marlene Dietrich wore, Tamara Ralph's false redesign takes the outmoded piece into the present era.

Jolie wasn't the only attendee at the "Maria" screening, though, who was drawing inspiration from the former starlets. Wearing a soft yellow silk crepon dress with a matching scarf tied to the train, Taylor Russell glided over the carpet. The custom-made Loewe ensemble evoked Marilyn Monroe from the 1953 movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," when the actress dons a flaming bejeweled gown topped off with an orange chiffon scarf, giving the ensemble a decidedly 1930s vibe. In her 1930 Spring-Summer collection, Coco Chanel also accessorized silk crepe gowns with an additional yard of cloth draped elegantly over the neck.

The festival's jury president, Isabelle Huppert, skipped ahead a few decades for her "Beetlejuice" premiere appearance. Theatergoers in the 1950s served as the inspiration for the "pope red" opera coat, according to British Vogue. Huppert accessorized the evening gown, which was taken from Balenciaga's 50th couture collection created in 2021, with a stack of Cartier bracelets on each wrist and white elbow gloves.

Mariana di Girolamo, a Chilean actor, also revived a classic shape for her Venice Film Festival performance. Considering that Chanel has been creating spectacular evening capes for nearly a century, her black embellished cloak dress, which she wore to the "El Jockey" screening, was a masterclass in leveraging fashion history. Di Girolamo's rendition featured sequins and stitched beads to create an outline of dazzle that was both glitzy and subtle.

The basic lesson is that sometimes vintage is precious, and that applies to both clothes and movies.
