After Friday night, Saquon Barkley might not want to leave the Southern Hemisphere. The Green Bay Packers are eager to return home.
In the first-ever NFL game played in Brazil, or south of the equator, Barkley made his debut with the Philadelphia Eagles. He stole the show in the regular-season opener for his new team, outgaining the Pack 34-29 and matching his career-high with three touchdowns from scrimmage.
With just six seconds remaining in the game's last drive, franchise quarterback Jordan Love appeared to have suffered a lower-body injury. He was assisted off the field with a noticeable limp, so the loss may not even be the team's biggest concern. Malik Willis, a recently acquired backup, played the final two snaps but was unable to advance the team. As the game came to a close, Eagles linebacker Zack Baun sacked Willis at midfield.
Early on, Barkley and Packers receiver Jayden Reed connected
via air, with both players landing in the end zone during the second quarter. After
five touches, Reed ended with 171 yards from scrimmage.
However, the Green Bay defense found it difficult to leave the field for the majority of the evening in its first game under new coordinator Jeff Hafley. LaFleur said that the Packers were "destroyed" in the red zone during a "slop fest" game, in which they managed only one score in four attempts. Furthermore, it didn't help that rookie kicker Brayden Narveson missed a field goal at the end of the third quarter. Hurts committed three turnovers (two picks and a fumble), but those errors more than made up for it. On that particular play, a poor snap was called on new starting center Cam Jurgens.
